The Dept. of Library and Research Documentation and Central Library is an important academic and research documentation facility meant for all students, teachers, doctors and other staff under the broad umbrella of Amala Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) spanning in Medical College, Nursing College, Nursing School, Para-Medical and Ayurveda Divisions, Hospitals and Offices. The Central Library is named after Padma Bhushan Rev. Fr. Gabriel Chiramel CMI.

Fr. Gabriel was an educationist, administrator, zoologist, author, and social reformer. He was the founder principal of Christ College (1956-1975), Irinjalakuda. He was also instrumental in establishing several other institutions such as St Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda; Carmel Higher Secondary School, Chalakudy; Bharat Matha School, Palakkad; Catholic Centre Irinjalakuda and Deepthi Cultural Centre, Kozhikode. He has also established the Zoology Department of Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Ernakulam.

It was during this time the Amala Cancer Hospital was established in 1978 which has now grown into AIMS offering courses such as MBBS, MD, MS, DM, BSc Nursing, General Nursing, other paramedical courses, Diploma course in nursing and therapy in Ayurveda. The institution aims at the integration of multiple systems of medicine viz., Modern Medicine, Ayurveda and Homeopathy on the same campus.

Fr Gabriel, who was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2007. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 103 years.

The Central Library is functioning as the College Library and Central Library for Amala Medical College, and Central Library for Amala Nursing College; Amala Institute of Allied Health Sciences Courses; Amala Nursing School; and Ayurveda Courses.

The Central library was established in the year 2003 along with the medical College.

The vision of Dept. of Library and Research Documentation and Central Library is to be a premier knowledge and learning hub that empowers students, faculty, and researchers through seamless access to high-quality medical literature and digital resources. We aim to foster academic excellence, innovation, and evidence-based practice by providing a dynamic, user-centered environment that supports education, research, and lifelong learning. Through continuous modernization, resource enrichment, and personalized services, the library aspires to become a model medical information center, integral to the advancement of healthcare education and delivery, and responsive to the evolving needs of the medical and scientific community.

The mission of the Department of Library and Research Documentation and Central Library at AIMS is to support and enhance the institution's academic, clinical, research and publishing goals by providing timely, accurate, and comprehensive access to medical and scientific information. We are committed to fostering a culture of inquiry, ethical scholarship, and evidence-based practice through high-quality library services, research support, and learning resources. By integrating traditional and digital tools, encouraging information literacy, and promoting open access, we aim to empower students, faculty, and researchers as lifelong learners and contributors to medical knowledge and healthcare excellence.

Major objectives of the Department of Library and Research Documentation and Central Library at AIMS are listed below:

  1. To provide seamless access to quality medical, scientific, and allied health information in both print and digital formats to support education, research, and clinical practice.
  2. To promote information literacy and research competencies among students, faculty, and healthcare professionals through training, workshops, and personalized guidance.
  3. To support academic excellence by maintaining up-to-date resources aligned with curriculum needs, research trends, and evidence-based practice.
  4. To facilitate ethical research practices through proper documentation, referencing, and research support services.
  5. To develop a hybrid library environment that integrates traditional library services with modern digital technologies and platforms.
  6. To foster a culture of lifelong learning by encouraging the effective and responsible use of medical information resources.
  7. To collaborate with national and international library networks to expand resource sharing and knowledge exchange opportunities.
  8. To support academic and scientific publishing by assisting faculty, researchers, and students in manuscript preparation, formatting, referencing, and submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  9. To maintain institutional research documentation through systematic archiving of theses, dissertations, faculty publications, and institutional scholarly output in both print and digital repositories.
  10. To promote ethical research and academic integrity by providing guidance on plagiarism checks, citation standards, and adherence to publishing ethics and documentation best practices.
  11. To support scholarly publishing by providing technical and editorial assistance in manuscript preparation, journal selection, and submission processes, thereby encouraging high-quality academic and clinical publications.
  12. To function as the Central Library and Referral Centre for all colleges, academic and research divisions, hospitals, offices and other departments under AIMS.
