The department undertakes Academic activities as well as diagnostic laboratory work. It offers services to the needs of the patients who are attending the Hospital. The services offered by the department are: Bacteriology, Immunology (mainly Serological test), Mycology, Mycobacteriology.

Bacteriology - Staining Methods, Gram's, Ziehl-Neelsen, Giemsa, etc. Also includes Culture of samples.

Body Fluids like CSF, Ascitic, Pleural, Synovial, etc.
AFB culture for Pulmonary and Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis
Blood Culture - Automated by BacT Alert
Stock cultures kept


Fungal staining and fungal culture for identification of fungal diseases. Stock cultures kept.


Diagnosis of viral diseases like Hepatitis A & E, Dengue, Chikungunya by serological methods.


ELISA - for antibody detection of viral diseases and Leptospira antibody,
ASO - by Turbidometry.

Additional Professor in Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur (2012 to 2013). Now working in Amala Institute of Medical Sciences HOD in Microbiology. Life member of Academy of Clinical Microbiologists & Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists.

Dr. J Vasudevan

Completed MBBS from Stanley Medical college, Chennai and received MD in Microbiology (Coimbatore Medical College) in March 2007. Now working in Amala Institute of Medical Sciences as Assistant Professor in Microbiology.

Dr. Santhosh B Patil

Completed MBBS from Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur, Karnataka in 2006. Recieved MD (Microbiology) from St. John's Medical College, Bengaluru in 2010. Postgraduate cum demonstrator at department of Microbiology(2007 to 2010) St. John's Medical College, Bengaluru. Assistant Professor in Department of Microbiology(2010 to 2013) Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Science and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu. Presently working as Associate Professor in Microbiology, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences. Member of Hospital infection control team.Having 4 publications.

Dr. Aiswarya Alex

Completed MBBS from UCMS, Nepal(Tribhuban university). Recieved MD Microbiology from KIMS(Dr. NTR University), Narketpally, Andhra Pradesh. Worked as Assistant Professor in MOSC Kolenchery(22-04-2013 to 28-02-2014). Presently working in Amala Institute of Medical Sciences as Assistant Professor in Microbiology from 01-03-2014 onwards. Life Member of Academy of Clinical Microbiologists.
