This department consisting of 2 doctors, provides inpatient, outpatient as well as home care for patients who live in a 5 Kilometer radius of the hospital. Nurses are trained in providing advanced symptom relief for patients. The department gets the support of social work department and also helped by a group of trained volunteers who provide support to patients. The goal of the department is to provide holistic care for patients with cancer predominantly. Inpatient care is provided in the ward with 24 beds, shared with the Radiation Oncology Department. Besides inpatient care, this department also provides specialist advice for patients admitted under other specialities. Depending on their needs, the patients are shifted to the ward or they are managed on other wards.

Graduated from Medical College, Kottayam (Kerala University) in 1979. Obtained Doctoral degree in General Surgery (M.S Gen. Surgery), from Medical College, Kottayam (Mahathma Gandhi University) in 1987 and Post Doctoral Degree in Surgical Oncology (MCh Oncology) from Cancer Institute,(WIA) Madras (The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University) in 1991. He had undergone advanced training in Orthopedic Oncology in Royal Orthopedic Hospital, Birmingham, UK for his Fellowship (ICRET-UICC). He was selected as Fellow of International Medical Science Academy (FIMSA) in 2011, in recognition of his contribution to medical science. As a demonstration of his substantial special contribution to surgical specialty he wa selected as fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Galsgow. (FRCS) in 2014. Devotes 100% of the time in Oncology (Surgical) Practice Teaching & Research. A Protagonist of this cutting edge technology, Trained numerous Surgeons in surgical Oncology. Trained in India, United Kingdom and under Japanese Surgeons. Performed more than 6000 major Oncological surgeries and transferred the technology to Srilanka. Presently Dr. Jacob Kurien serves as Prof & H.O.D Department of Surgical Oncology Amala Institute of Medical Sciences Thrissur Kerala . After serving as Senior House Officer, moved up to be a Registrar in Geriatric Medicine. In the meantime, completed MRCP from London in 2006. Took up a post in a Hospice for 2 months and later got a Specialist training post in Palliative Medicine in Liverpool. Completed 4 years of specialist training in Palliative Medicine and is on the specialist register in the UK. Took up the Consultant post in Amala Medical College after becoming a qualified consultant.
